Before fitting

On the T5 you need to remove the intake manifold to reach the rocker cover. Some manifold bolts are awkward to get at so allow time for access. Follow the Volkswagen procedure for moving the front radiator assembly into the service position where required. Support the engine as specified if an engine mount needs releasing.

This engine uses a gear driven camshaft. Setting the timing also involves setting the backlash between the camshaft gear and the adjustable intermediate gear. Have the correct timing and holding tools ready before starting. Dont use a timing locator to take the tightening load unless the workshop procedure specifies it.

Keep the bolts in labelled groups as you remove them. Some differ only slightly in length. Check your tools fit before dismantling and take care around the end covers to avoid damaging the sealing faces.

While the injectors are out have their bores checked as well as the seals. In a BPC repair account on VWWatercooled the owner reported persistent misfires after fitting rebuilt injectors and a new tandem pump. A later inspection revealed wear marks in the injector bores. New seals alone may not seal against a worn bore.

Investigate any suspected diesel contamination in the oil before finishing the repair. A billet or nitrided camshaft wont correct an injector leak or wear in the cylinder head.

Renew the required injector seals and fixings. Check injector seating and alignment and complete the injector rocker adjustment after fitting the camshaft. If the fuel system has been opened follow the specified priming procedure before starting. The same BPC owner initially reported a dry fuel filter and no firing after repeated cranking.

Use the Volkswagen workshop procedure for your engine code for tightening sequences, torque settings, gear backlash and timing. Complete the prescribed manual rotation and timing checks and remove all setting tools before starting the engine.
